Record decline in volume of Himalayan glaciers over 20 years

A 20-year record of glacier volume in the Himalayas has revealed a decline in the volume of Himalayan glaciers.

He revealed that during 20 years, the volume of Himalayan glaciers has decreased so much that it is equivalent to 57 million elephants. University of St. Andrews in Great Britain, Graz University of Technology in Austria, Chinier Academy of Sciences in China, and Carnegie Mellon in America. This joint research by the university sheds light on the impending reduction in the volume of glaciers.

The study reported that the volume of Himalayan glaciers has decreased by 6.5%.

According to the study, the central Himalayas are the most affected, where lakes formed by melting glaciers are forming rapidly.

The researchers said that the results of the research will eliminate the uncertainty regarding the decline in the overall volume of glaciers and help in the management of water resources.

The study further stated that from 2000 to 2020, the number of lakes in the region increased by 47%, their area by 33% and the amount of water by 42%.

This increase in lakes is largely a result of the reduction in the volume of glaciers.

The researchers said there is a need to understand what causes glaciers to shrink in size.

The results of this research were published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
