Against the dominance of Google Maps, Meta, a group comprising Microsoft, Amazon and mapping company TomTom has released the first open map dataset.

A group called OverTrue Maps Foundation was formed in 2022.

Using this open map data set, third-party developers will be able to create mapping or navigation products to break the dominance of Apple and Google Maps.

It contains data on 59 million locations, including restaurants and famous landmarks, while also providing details on transport networks and other things.

This data was collected by Meta and Microsoft and handed over to the group.

"Releasing the data is an important step toward creating a comprehensive map for our ever-changing world," said Mark Prevolio, director of the OverTrue Maps Foundation.

It also includes data from locations not already available in open data sets, making it possible to learn about markets in every corner of the world, he said.

He said that anyone working on mapping knows that the initial data is just the beginning, the bigger challenge is to change the data according to the expectations of the users.

When the group was announced last year, the companies involved said the data would be expanded to more locations over time.

According to the companies, the goal of the group is to make it easier and cheaper for developers to create apps that currently cost money to use Apple or Google Maps.
