For more than a decade now, Pakistan has been facing an acute gas crisis in the winter season. The government resorted to imported LNG to meet this shortfall, but given the global recession and dwindling domestic foreign exchange reserves, Pakistan cannot afford the rising prices. In this context, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed an agreement with the state-owned company of Azerbaijan in Lahore on Sunday, according to which Pakistan will buy a cargo ship of LNG from it every month. In light of the positive talks with Qatar, he also offered to the private sector to get cheap LNG from there, to facilitate which the government will provide all facilities at the Karachi port. Azerbaijan is a country rich in natural resources and has ongoing bilateral fraternal and trade relations with Pakistan.
